It’s possible to enter Laos by land or air from Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam or China. Land borders are often remote and the travelling can be tough either side, but the actual frontier crossing is usually pretty simple.

You can also get into Lao by land from China, Vietnam, Thailand and Cambodia.
Cambodia and Laos share a remote frontier that includes some of the wildest areas of both countries. There is only one border crossing open to foreigners.
- Voeun Kham / Dong Kralor
Tourist Visa is available upon arrival; it is good for tourist coming from Cambodia to visit Laos through Pakse to Vientiane.
- Mohan (Bohan) / Boten
It is the only Laos-China border open for foreigners and make an easy short excursion while en route from Udomxai to Luang Namtha.
- Nong Khai / Tha Na Leng, Vientiane
The Lao-Thai friendship Bridge spans the Mekong River between Nong Khai in Thailand and Tha Na Leng in Laos, approximately 20km from Vientiane.
- Chong Mek / Vang Tao
Is the busiest in southern Lao. From Pakse is 44km to border. When your transport stops, walk about 300m up to the green-roofed building, where you will be stamped out.
There are 7 (and counting) overland crossings between Vietnam and Lao. Thirty day Lao visas are now available at the busies borders, but currently not at Nam Xoi, Na Phao and Phou Keua border.
- Lao Bao / Dansavanh
Known as Lao Bao-Dansavanh, this is the most popular border crossing between Laos and Vietnam and is usually the most hassle free. The border town of Lao Bao is on Hwy 9, 80km west of Dong Ha. Just across the border is the southern Lao province of Savanakhet, and the first town you come to is Sepon.
- Cao Treo / Nam Phao
Vietnam’s Hwy 8 hits Laos at the Keo Nua Pass, known as Cau Treo in Vietnamese and Kaew Neua in Laos. The border is 96km west of Vinh and about 30km east of Lak Sao in Laos. Thirty day Lao visas are available, but Vietnamese visas must be arranged in advance.
- Nam Can / Nong Haet
Is 119km east of Phonsavan and 250km northwest of Vinh. Thirty day Lao visas are available, but Vietnamese visas must be arranged in advance.
- Cha Lo / Na Phao
Situated between Don Bai Dinh (Vietnam) and Na Phao (Laos). Laos and Vietnamese visas are not available at this border.
- Nam Xoi / Na Meo
In Thanh Hoa province. It is the most remote crossing, 175km northwest of Thanh Hoa (Vietnam) and 70km east of Xam Nua (Laos). Laos and Vietnamese visas are not available at this border.
- Bo Y / Phou Keau
The border Bo Y-Phou Keau border crossing lies 86km northeast of Kon Tum (Vietnam) and 119km northwest of Attapeu (Laos). Laos and Vietnamese visas are not available at this border.
- Tay Trang / Sop Hun
The Laos border at Tay Trang is 34km from Dien Bien Phu. Laos and Vietnamese visas are not available at this border.
